Course Description

Medicine and War from Ancient Times to 1865 | Explore the history of military medicine from ancient times to 1865. Examine the impact of medical services structures, types of warfare, weapons, wounds, illnesses and treatments on soldier survival. $33 includes $32 fee. Note: Requires membership in Peer Learning Partnership (PLP). Biannual membership is $30.

Learner Outcomes

Discuss major factors that are important in understanding military medicine across cultures and time; Identify sources of societal knowledge and theories about illness, health, medicine, and surgery; Describe the training and status of medical personnel in different cultures and time periods; Identify and discuss the influence of types of warfare and weapons on types of wounds and actual treatments proposed; Examine the contribution of outstanding individuals who moved forward the care of soldiers at war.
