Course Description

Dental Assisting Lecture | Learn the basic skills necessary to become an entry-level dental assistant. Examine dental anatomy, terminology and instruments. Explore roles and responsibilities, patient communication strategies and infection control procedures. Prepare for the Dental Assisting National Boards Radiation Health and Safety exam. Textbook information available at AACC Bookstore. CEUs issued. $345 includes $25 fee.  Corequisites: OPA-382 Dental Assisting Skills Lab, OPA 383- Dental Assisting Radiology Lecture and OPA 384-Dental Assisting Radiology Skills Lab.  Note: Must have a high school or GED® diploma and be 18 or older to enroll. English as a Second Language students must earn a composite score of 310 or better on the Level of English Proficiency exam, or successfully complete Capstone Level ESL coursework. Additional cost for the Dental Assisting National Board Exam for the Radiation Health and Safety exam and for teal scrubs and shoes.

Learner Outcomes

Define and appropriately use dental terminology related to dental anatomy, procedures, and instruments; Explain the principles of infection control, including sterilization and disinfection, in accordance with OSHA and CDC guidelines; Describe the roles and responsibilities in four-handed dentistry during restorative, preventive, and surgical procedures; Identify common dental instruments, materials, and equipment used in general and specialty practices; Discuss effective patient communication strategies, including legal and ethical considerations, patient confidentiality, and methods for managing dental anxiety.
