Course Description

Cosmopolitanism: Ancient Times to Present | Explore the origins of cosmopolitanism, what it means to be a citizen of the world, in ancient Greece and its later manifestations in Eastern and Western thought and practice and its relevance today. $33 includes a $32 fee. Note: Requires membership in Peer Learning Partnership (PLP). Biannual membership is $30.

Learner Outcomes

Explore the basic components of cosmopolitanism; Analyze the interpretations and critiques of cosmopolitanism in later thought; Discover the influence of seaport merchants on coastal cities; Become familiar with, and analyze, the obstacles to cosmopolitanism; Understand the relationship between cosmopolitanism and nationalism/patriotism; Explore one’s own individual relationship to cosmopolitanism, and the cosmopolitanism of one’s own local community; Examine the influence of cosmopolitanism on the arts.
