Course Description

How to Spot a Logical Fallacy and Know Why the Logic is Wrong | Gain an introduction to the foundations of logical reasoning and the ways it can go wrong. Learn to identify, analyze and refute formal and informal logical fallacies, from flawed syllogisms to emotional appeals and propaganda. Gain practical tools for evaluating arguments, detecting manipulation and applying sound reasoning. $33 includes $32 fee. Note: Requires membership in Peer Learning Partnership (PLP).

Learner Outcomes

Recognize the structure and branches of logic, including formal and informal logic; Apply the three fundamental laws of logic to evaluate reasoning; Identify and analyze formal fallacies in syllogistic and propositional logic; Differentiate between deductive, inductive, and abductive reasoning and recognize the fallacies unique to each; Evaluate arguments for informal fallacies common in critical thinking and public discourse; Detect emotional and manipulative propaganda techniques in contemporary communication; Construct sound, logically consistent arguments free from fallacious reasoning.
