Course Description

A companion to Truxal Librarys latest GenAI Public Service Announcement, which explores how and why generative AI tools are designed to flatter users. Participants discuss two texts that speak to the ethics of AI sycophancy, a recent article published in the journal AI Ethics, and a passage from Aristotles Nicomachean Ethics. Learn about how and why generative AI tools are designed to be sycophantic. Examine the impact of AI sycophancy. Explore the ethical issues of choosing to design GenAI tools so that they do not critique or contest the data we train them on, the questions we ask an AI tool to answer, or the tasks we want an AI tool to perform. This seminar is supported by The CLAW (Center for Liberal Arts Work).
