Course Description

Medicine Aide | Geriatric nursing assistants with one year of experience and employed in a Maryland LTC nursing home will become certified to administer medications to nursing home clients. Learn about the recognition, safe preparation and administration of medications. Textbook information available at AACC Bookstore. CEUs issued. $960 includes $160 fee. Note: Students who successfully complete the course will receive a certificate valid for two years. Program coordinator approval required prior to registering. Background check for an additional fee is required.

Learner Outcomes

Examine the certification and recertification requirements of the Certified Medicine Aide (CMA) in Maryland and the CMA's relationship as a member of the healthcare team; Demonstrate the ability to locate, identify and use drug standards, references and resources; Perform selected procedures and techniques for administering oral, topical and suppositorial medications based on individual client's needs; Measure, record and report apical pulse, apical/radial pulse and blood pressure accurately and as indicated by drug regime; Apply basic observational, recording and reporting skills associated with medication administration.
