Course Description

Clinical Medical Assisting II: Clinical Theory and Skills Lab II | Learn introductory laboratory procedures and functions, including Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations and Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) standards related to laboratory operations. In lab sessions, focus on quality control, preanalytical accessioning and processing, performing venipuncture procedures, urinalysis, basic microbiology, point of care testing, and other diagnostic procedures that are performed in the physicians' office or outpatient setting. Students are required to practice selected procedures on each other during college laboratory under instructor supervision. Textbook information available at AACC Bookstore. Learner Outcomes

Apply safety and regulatory guidelines in the Medical Laboratory to include CLIA testing and perform quality checks on point of care testing equipment to ensure accuracy of results; State the purpose of the different departments within a clinical medical laboratory such as chemistry, urinalysis, microbiological, hematology, immunology, and immunohematology; Discuss processing and accessioning of blood and non-blood specimens within a clinical laboratory to include storage, handling, documentation of patient information and transporting; Perform venipuncture and collection procedures of non-blood specimens to include basic hematological testing, urine testing, basic microbiology and point of care testing; Identify safety techniques that can be used in responding to accidental exposure to blood, other body fluids, needle sticks, and chemicals; Recall the classifications of medications to include indications for use, desired effects, side effects, and adverse reactions; Demonstrate correct dosage calculations of medication for administration; Demonstrate clinical communication, infection control, and vital measurements in a clinical setting.
