Course Description

Design and Production of Art Objects | Learn about the process of creating quality craft and art objects. Discuss the marketing and business skills needed to sell crafts and artwork. Note: Senior Cycle fee class. Students must be 55 years or older by start date in order to enroll in this class.

Learner Outcomes

Identify primary markets for hand-made art objects; Design and construct popular art items and describe sources that can be used to market them effectively; Demonstrate various methods of advertising, displaying and pricing merchandise; Determine ways to increase sales by using appropriate marketing techniques. Compare similar art objects at venues and determine sales potential.

Online | Pastels | This course is for students of all levels, from beginner to advanced. Beginners will learn materials and pastel application methods through demonstrations, while advanced students will explore art principles and new techniques. Students will discover pastels as an exciting alternative to traditional painting methods. Individual attention is provided, and topics like framing, exhibiting, and shipping pastels will be covered. Students will paint their own subjects or images chosen by the instructor, with an emphasis on individuality, taking risks, and working from photographs. | Note: Attendance in online class sessions Tuesdays from 1-3:30 p.m. is mandatory for section 304.

Students will learn how to evaluate reference images and gain confidence with a three-step approach to watercolor. Techniques to avoid muddy colors will be covered, with demos and critiques to help students refine their work. Severn Senior Center | Drawing and Painting | Participants will complete several art projects of their own choosing, such as still life, portrait, and landscape, in a relaxed and fun atmosphere. No previous art experience is required. Drawing basics such as line, value, light and shadow, linear perspective, and portrait proportions will be covered using pencil, eraser and drawing paper. Color basics such as primary, secondary, tertiary, complementary, and neutral colors, tint, tone, and shade will be covered using acrylic paint and oil pastel on drawing paper.
