Course Description

Contemporary Literature | Examine literature from the 1900s to the present. See how authors respond to and initiate change in society. Note: Senior Cycle fee class. Students must be 55 years or older by start date in order to enroll in this class.

Learner Outcomes

Discuss the author's purpose in writing a particular novel; Recognize elements of the novel including irony and use of doppelgangers; Discuss how the elements of a novel affect the understanding of an audience; Connect societal happenings with text form and content.

Online | The Best Mystery Stories of the year 2025 | No class Nov. 26 | Former defense attorney John Grisham is the editor of The Best Mystery Stories of the Year (2025). Included in this anthology are tales of suspense and crime. This anthology continues the popularity of mysteries which focus on the darker side if humanity. Each week read and discuss two stories based on discussion questions sent out before class. | Note: Short Stories. Attendance in online class sessions on Thursdays from 1-3:30 p.m. is mandatory for section 901.
