Course Description

Core Stability Techniques 2 | Improve the function of deep trunk muscles for correct alignment of the spine and other stabilization techniques through skills and concepts utilized in Pilates. Note: Senior Cycle fee class. Students must be 55 years or older by start date in order to enroll in this class.

Learner Outcomes

Examine the anatomy and bio-mechanics of core stability; Discuss the benefits of core stability related to posture, injury management and functional performance; Demonstrate techniques to stabilize and strengthen deep trunk muscles and maintain postural alignment; Outline safety considerations when training for core stability; Discuss and demonstrate techniques for self-assessment.

Annapolis Senior Center | Pilates with Weights | This progressive Mat Pilates class emphasizes building core strength and learning controlled movement of the arms and legs to increase strength, flexibility, and fluidity. Early sessions include discussion of Pilates history and philosophy alongside gentle movement variations. By the end of the 10-week session, classes are primarily exercise-based, incorporating more advanced, strenuous variations and additional exercises. Online | Balance and Posture/Fall Prevention | No class September 7 | This class combines stretching and strengthening for a full-body workout. We begin with basic stretches, like easy yoga movements, starting in the chair to warm and stretch muscles. Then, we move to core exercises using the chair and mat to build stronger abs and core. We also focus on proper breathing to relax muscles, improving flexibility, tone, strength, and circulation. Each session is unique, set to inspiring music for motivation. | Note: Attendance in online class sessions Mondays from 10- 11am is mandatory for section 303.

Severn Senior Center | Stretch, Mobility and Balance | Strengthening muscles is but one part of our fitness journey; joint range of motion, or mobility, is another. This class will draw from many sources of inspiration from athletic conditioning to yoga and tai chi making use of the barre, chairs, and available equipment (bands, straps, etc). You will NOT need to get down on the floor.
