Course Description

Weight Training for Older Adults | Learn proper techniques for the development of muscular strength, cardio-respiratory endurance, flexibility and body composition. Discuss body composition and nutrition required to maintain health and fitness during a weight training regimen. Note: Senior Cycle fee class. Students must be 55 years or older by start date in order to enroll in this class.

Learner Outcomes

Demonstrate proper safety procedures and use of equipment in the weight room; Administer and interpret assessments to correctly determine muscle strength, endurance, flexibility and body composition; Identify lifting techniques used for developing specific muscle groups helpful for older adults; Explain the principles governing weight training regiments such as overload, progressive resistance, specificity and adequate recovery; Compare and contrast various resistance formats of weight training programs i.e. isotonic, isometric and isokinetic.

Online | Strength Training | No class May 25 | This class is designed to improve function, including strength of the legs, hips, back, shoulders, and arms. We focus on multi-muscle use and mobility. This class includes balance exercises. Exercises are done using hand weights, tubing, and your own body weight to create resistance and strength focus on your core. This class is suitable for all levels of fitness. Modifications are always offered to show you ways you can challenge your workout or accommodate individual needs. Suggested Equipment: Hand weights, resistance bands, playground ball, mat | Note: Attendance in online class sessions Mondays from 12:15-1:15p.m. is mandatory for section 201.

Online | Strength Training | This class is designed to be effective, not easy. We combine proper technique, coordination, balance, and flexibility to combat the loss of muscle mass associated with aging. Students will be challenged but are encouraged to work within their own limits. No prior weight training experience is needed. About 70% of the class is standing. Which includes wall exercise (plank, chair etc.). 30% of the class is performed on floor which includes a on and off the floor exercise/ stretches. Suggested Equipment: Chair, Mat, wall space, medium to light weights * knee pads | Note: Attendance in online class sessions Wednesdays from 12:15- 1:15p.m. is mandatory for section 215.
