Course Description

The Lady and the Unicorn: Tapestries of Medieval France | Discover medieval culture, literature and philosophy by examining The Lady and The Unicorn, six tapestries from the Musée de Cluny in Paris which tell stories of passion, power and love. Note: Senior Cycle fee class. Students must be 55 years or older by start date in order to enroll in this class.

Learner Outcomes

Examine the culture and philosophies of French society in the 1500’s during the historical Medieval period of France; Identify the history of Lady and the Unicorn Tapestry creation and the methods used to preserve the six tapestries; List four hidden clues found in the tapestries that represent the culture in Medieval society and two of the theories for the unusual depictions; Describe the interpretation of the sixth tapestry “A Mon Seul Desir” and detail its representation as a sixth sense; Discuss the value of Historical Art as a tool to explore historical culture and practices.
