Course Description

Community Interpreting Foundations: Part 1 | Prepare to use multilingual skills to become a professional community interpreter. Included textbook: The Community Interpreter. Textbook included in tuition fee and will be provided to students. 3 CEUs. $452 includes $182 fee, includes one ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview exam fee. Note: Designed for students at advanced low proficiency level or above in target and source languages. For official definition of ACTFL proficiencies please visit the ACTFL website. Corequisite: WLS-326: Community Interpreting Foundations: Part 2. Students must register for WLS-325: Community Interpreting Foundations: Part 1 and WLS-326: Community Interpreting Foundations: Part 2 simultaneously.

Learner Outcomes

Describe common encounters in community interpreting settings (education, healthcare, social services); describe terminology and vocabulary for different interpreting settings; identify the role(s) of the interpreter in community interpreting encounters; apply interpreter code of ethics and standards; apply appropriate decision-making strategies for common challenges in community interpreting; employ sight translation, consecutive and simultaneous interpreting skills in community settings; demonstrate professionalism and respect for cultural differences/nuances.

Note: Section 201 is hybrid with face-to-face meetings on Saturday, May 2 from 1-5 p.m., and Wednesday, May 6 & 13 from 6-9 p.m. at Arnold. Attendance in online class sessions on Mondays and Fridays from 6-9 p.m. is mandatory for section 201.
