Course Description

James Baldwin: A Centennial Exploration | Explore James Baldwin’s life and writings during this centennial year of his birth. Examine the impact he has had on literature and human rights and learn what it means to be a Black man born in America. $33 includes a $32 fee.

Learner Outcomes

Familiarize seminar participants with Baldwin’s life, writings, and influence on Black writers and artists; Understand the challenges Baldwin faced as a gay Black man in America and the essence of his prophetic voice; Explore the main themes of his writings by reading his essays in Notes of a Native Son;  Appreciate the influence on his writings of music, visual art, and other Black writers.
