Course Description

Explore the Ridgely and Hancock families farms, their architectural styles, and their owners contributions to Marylands economy, arts, and politics. Develop skills to evaluate historic properties, understand agricultural structures, and become familiar with historic preservation. Compare and contrast these 18th-century farms features during on-site visits. Evening lecture, next-day tour of the $99 includes $40 fee. Note: Transportation provided. Extensive walking and standing required without assistance. Wear comfortable walking shoes and dress for outdoors. Bring a bag for lunch or purchase one on your own.

Learner Outcomes

Develop a comprehensive understanding of the Ridgely and Hancock families, the distinct types of farms they built, and the way these were passed down through generations; Identify two architectural styles found on the Ridgely and Hancock properties and name the contributions of their owners to Maryland's economy, arts, and political life; Evaluate the Ridgely and Hancock properties for a variety of agricultural structures, architectural stylistic details, and decorative arts; Name three characteristics of Ridgely, an 18th century planter and Hancock, and 18th century yeoman, and summarize the accomplishments of each; Describe the significance of Historic Preservation and name two guidelines to be listed as a National Historic Landmark.
