Course Description

American Presidency from George Washington to Ulysses S. Grant | Participate in a comprehensive examination of U.S. presidents from George Washington to Ulysses S. Grant, focusing on their ideologies, presidential goals and the challenges they faced. Analyze the effectiveness of each president in addressing key issues and examine the pre- and post-presidential years. Note: Students must be 55 or older by start date to enroll in this class.

Learner Outcomes

Articulate two origins of the American presidential responsibilities following the Constitutional Convention in 1787; List five key aspects of the evolution of 19th century American democracy that allowed the rise of new industries, growth of cities, and advancements in technology and culture; Explain the development of political parties and explain the origins of the first political party system established in 1790s; Identify at least two ideological motivations of each of the presidents from George Washington to Ulysses S. Grant; Name one or more key contributions of each presidency through Ulysses S. Grant and discuss the impact of each to American history.
