American Federal Architecture (1785 to 1830) | Explore the American style of Federal Period architecture and furnishings. Attend an illustrated lecture of samples of Maryland painted furniture, examples of inlays, tapered legs and fragility, and discover the stylistic characteristics of the Federal style in the U.S. Participate in a guided tour to Homewood House and the Maryland Historical Society. $95 includes $52 fee. Note: Transportation by AACC included. Extensive walking and standing required without assistance. Bring a bag lunch or purchase one on own. Wear comfortable walking shoes and dress for outdoors.Learner Outcomes
Identify five stylistic elements that are associated with the American Federal Period that reflect the nations’ new identity and architectural influence; Apply knowledge of Federal Period style by identifying and categorizing at least seven furnishings, paint, and woodwork in the Homewood House; Compare and contrast Federal Period furnishings with the high relief carving of the Chippendale and Rococo styles of the Revolutionary War period, and compare with the heavy, plain, early Victorian style/ Empire style; Identify five characteristics of the Federal Period and apply them to furniture at the Maryland Historical Society; Explain the contributions made by Baltimore craftsmen during the Federal Period into the early 19th century and list two ways the growth and development of the city attracted craftsmen of furniture and other trades.Loading...
