Course Description

PreApprenticeship Carpentry A | Learn to use the right tools for the job on entry-level carpentry skills. Explore job site safety concepts. Interpret construction drawings and written specifications in accordance with construction building codes. Learn use and handling of lumber, masonry, composite building materials, engineered building materials, fasteners, anchors and adhesives. Distinguish between flooring systems, components and methods for construction. Participate in hands-on lab activities. Participate in industry standard safety training including, OSHA-30 General Construction, and Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED certifications. $1,457 includes $347 fee, textbook and supplies. Prerequisite: Students must attend INF-300: Information Session for Skilled Trades prior to registration. Corequisites: Pre-Apprenticeship Carpentry Training Part B (CIT-302) and Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED (NRN-332). Note: Must be 16 or older to enroll. There are additional costs for Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED (NRN-332), which includes required online coursework and assignments completed through Canvas.

Learner Outcomes

Identify and describe the proper methods of use and handling for lumber, masonry, composite building materials, engineered building materials, fasteners, anchors, and adhesives: Identify and demonstrate safe use and maintenance of PPE, hand and power tools; Interpret construction drawings and written specifications in accordance with construction building codes; Distinguish between flooring systems including components and methods for the constructions using common lumber and/or engineered building materials; Employ mathmatic calculations including basic operations, geometric principles, and algebric processes to estimate, measure, and layout materials.
