Course Description

China: The Middle Kingdom | Discover Chinese historical key events, philosophies and societal shifts and how they compare to those of the U.S. Explore the world view from China’s perspective and examine current challenges in the U.S.-China relationship. Gain an introduction to basic elements of the Chinese language and cultural practices. $90 includes $10 fee.

Learner Outcomes

Identify three significant historical facts about China and name two influential dynasties that exemplify the Chinese dynastic system; Explain American perceptions of Chinese society and describe one example each of an ancient Chinese tradition, cultural value, and celebrated folklore; Compare key Chinese cultural characteristics collectivism, respect for authority, and social harmony and compare it to the American value of individualism; Describe two current challenges impacting the economic and defense relationship between China and the United States; Demonstrate basic language skills by accurately reciting five common Chinese commands, greetings, and vocabulary words.
