Course Description

Favorite Poems: Home and Abroad | Share, read, and discuss favorite poems, building on the Favorite Poem Project created by Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky. Poetry has a double nature: both inward, close to ones heart and memory, and outward, reflecting communal aspects of culture and public concerns. Because of poetrys dual nature, this course will incorporate participants favorite poems as well as the work of poets from other countries around the world. We will map our personal and community search for meaning and connection.

Learner Outcomes

Identify and define key literary elements in poetry (imagery, metaphor, symbolism, tone, rhythm, and rhyme scheme); Recognize distinct poetic forms and structures (sonnets, haikus, free verse, villanelles, etc.); Explain the historical and cultural contexts of major poems and their author; Analyze how poetic devices contribute to meaning and emotional impact in selected poems; Interpret the themes and messages conveyed through different poetic works; Compare and contrast the styles, techniques, and themes across multiple poems and poets.
