Course Description

Social Polarization: Regaining Balance | Explore the basic concepts and historical context of social polarization in the United States today. Why should we care? What are the causes, implications and possible solutions? Participants will be encouraged to engage in class.

Learner Outcomes

Examine the basic concepts and terminology of political philosophy with a focus on liberalism, democracy, good-faith disagreements, and civility; Explore the polarization dynamic, the different types of polarization such as “political” vs “belief”, and the concept of political identity; Discuss the wide array of hypothesized causes, implications, and solutions to the polarization problem; Examine the wide variety of potential actions that are being proposed and undertaken, as well as the challenges associated with their implementation.
