Course Description

The Rise and Fall of American Women 1915-1950 | Explore how two world wars and dramatic shifts in education, work and family transformed American women between 1915 and 1950. Learn how our mothers navigated upheaval using fashion and popular culture in American history as lenses. See how these changes shaped the attitudes and experiences of Americas later generations. Note: Senior Cycle fee class. Students must be 55 or older by start date to enroll in this class.

Learner Outcomes

Identify five historically supported examples of the shifts in womens experiences with education, work, and family during 1915–1950. Evaluate the lives of at least five notable American women from this era, focusing on media, marketing, and societal expectations in a small‑group discussion. Describe three key societal changes of 1915–1950 and list why some were later modified which changed the American work force, reproductive norms, education and political engagement of women in America. Name two major societal expectations placed on women during 1915–1950 and explain how these influenced the perceptions of the next generation.

Using fashion and popular culture in American history as lenses, this course reveals how our mothers navigated upheaval and how these changes shaped the attitudes and experiences of later generations in American society. Note: Attendance in online class sessions Thursdays from 2:00-4:00 p.m. is mandatory for section 301.
