Selected Topics in the Philosophy of Mathematics | Explore selected topics in the philosophy of mathematics, including whether there is knowledge not arising from experience, whether mathematics is independent of the mind and the handling of infinity. $33 includes $32 fee. Note: Requires membership in Peer Learning Partnership (PLP). Biannual membership is $30.

Learner Outcomes

Differentiate between knowledge from experience and knowledge independent of experience; Recognize the role of intuition in our knowledge of time and space; Evaluate different points of view on whether mathematics is in the world or only in the mind; Investigate how the results of infinite processes might be wrong and what mathematicians did to resolve this; Examine the attempt to make the results of mathematics more certain by reducing mathematics to logic.
