Course Description

Edgar Allan Poe: Poems, Tales, and Essays | Shine a light into the dark works of Edgar Allan Poe. Read the short stories, poems and criticism of the only American literary figure to inspire the name of a major football team- the Baltimore Ravens. Discuss Poes contributions to poetry, the genres of horror and detective fiction, and emerging American literary criticism. Note: Senior Cycle fee class. Students must be 55 years or older by start date in order to enroll in this class.

Learner Outcomes

Analyze the origins of the genres of horror and detective stories in the American literary tradition. Articulate the aesthetic issues that guided Poes thinking about American writing. Probe Poes ability to build suspense and heighten emotional states of fear, hate, loathing, and grief. Reconsider the myths that surround Poes life, death, and reputation. Inquire into the morbid fascination humans hold for tragedy, death, murderous instinct, and delusional thinking. Investigate Poes fearlessness, hope, and originality.
