Course Description

Mechanical Technology Lecture | Gain industry knowledge in heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), plumbing systems and forklift operations. Learn the proper use of hand and power tools. Explore safety practices, trade mathematics, piping systems, heating and cooling concepts, and air distribution systems. Participate in industry standard safety training including, OSHA 30 General Construction, Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED and EPA 608 Refrigerant Certifications. CEUs issued. $1,245 includes $135 fee and supplies. Prerequisite: Students must attend INF-300: Information Session for Skilled Trades prior to registration. Corequisites: Mechanical Technology Lab (CIT-317) and Heart Saver First Aid CPR AED (NRN-332). Note: Must be 16 or older to enroll. There is an additional cost for Heart Saver First Aid CPR AED (NRN-332).

Learner Outcomes

Identify and demonstrate safe use and maintenance of hand and power tools; Interpret construction drawings and written specifications in accordance with construction building codes; Employ basic measurement, algebra, and geometry calculations necessary for mechanical trades to estimate, measure, and layout materials in both the classroom and laboratory environment; Apply OSHA safety training to identify and mitigate workplace and laboratory risks with reference to industry regulations, tool use, material handling guidelines, and personal protective equipment; Describe the principles that guide HVAC and Plumbing installation and service techniques; Describe how water is distributed in municipal, residential, and private water systems; Describe the uses and types of different pipe materials and fittings in plumbing and hvac installations including plastic, copper, cast iron, and steel; Identify the different types and sizes of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipes and fittings; Discuss the fundamental principles of forklift operation and safety practices; Discuss the importance of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations in the HVAC industry; Identify refrigerants and the proper handling, storage, and transportation of refrigerants to prevent environmental harm.
