Course Description

Central Sterile Processing Externship: 1 | Examine the functions and responsibilities of the Central Sterile Processor for infection control and traffic patterns when in the operating room and other departments. Identify proper storage and transportation standards for supplies. CEUs issued. $206 includes $156 fee. Background check and drug screens are included in the fee. Corequisite: STP 506 Central Sterile Processing: Externship 2, STP 507 Central Sterile Processing: Externship 3, STP 508 Central Sterile Processing: Externship 4. Note: Must be 18 or older to enroll. The externship is held during week days (no weekends) at certain medical facilities and space is limited. Note: Students must have coordinator approval to register.

Learner Outcomes

Explain the factors that affect how long a package can be considered safe for use; List conditions that would make a product unsafe for use; Describe the process of recall for medical/surgical supplies; Identify standards and facility policies on reprocessing of single use items; Interpret and apply medical terminology as associated with sterile processing.
