Course Description

Mount Harmon: A Georgian Architectural Gem | Examine the characteristics of the Georgian period of architecture on a plantation located on Maryland's Eastern Shore. Explore the Mount Harmon Plantation and its importance to the tobacco trade and the colony of Maryland. An evening lecture followed by a tour of the Mount Harmon Plantation the next day. $92 includes $38 fee. Note: Transportation by AACC included. Extensive walking required. Participants must be able to walk and stand for hours without assistance. Bring a bag lunch or purchase on own. Wear comfortable walking shoes and dress for outdoors.

Learner Outcomes

Demonstrate an understanding of Maryland architectural characteristics in the 17th and 18th centuries; Compare and contrast the differences between a Delmarva area plantation house and a city house of the 1750 and 1800 periods; Identify the families that have owned the Mount Harmon Plantation, the importance of the tobacco trade to the economy, and its effect on the colony of Maryland; Assess the preservation and restoration efforts at Mount Harmon Plantation and its significance to Maryland; Recognize and evaluate the furnishings of the Georgian period and discuss how the furnishings were transported from the British Isles.
