The China Trade: Ceramics | Discover the significance of Chinese trade upon European and American decorative arts, primarily ceramic design in the 18th and 19th centuries. Examine examples of Chinese export wares that reached the U.S. Discuss the significance of Chinas trade upon exploration of the New World while exploring the Winterthur Museum. $104 includes $46 fee.

Learner Outcomes

Explain the reason for the Chinese influence upon European and American decorative arts, primarily ceramics design in the 18th and 19th century; Identify and compare the differences between porcelain, creamware, pearlware, redware and stoneware pottery; Discuss the influence of porcelain and Chinese wares upon the West’s furniture and how those designs were used by English cabinet makers in the Queen Anne and Chippendale designs of the 1700’s; Recognize and evaluate the significance of the 4,000 mile long Silk route and how it led to cultural exchange between the East and the West; Assess the significance of the China trade upon exploration of the New World by Columbus, DeSoto, Cortez, and Hudson.
