Course Description

In Sickness and in Health: How Does My Body Work? | Do you want to better understand how your body systems function and change with age? How various medical problems develop and are approached clinically? Examine anatomic terminology and physiological processes. Explore the nervous system and the interactions of nerves, spinal cord, brain and sense organs. Note: Senior Cycle fee class. Students must be 55 years or older by start date in order to enroll in this class.

Learner Outcomes

Identify the major bones in the human body and discuss the classifications of joints based on structure and degree of movement allowed; Recognize how the principles of blood typing translate into practices for safe blood transfusions; Contrast the structure and function of arteries, arterioles, capillaries, venules, and veins and map the general flow of blood through the pulmonary and systemic circuits; Relate the mechanism of pulmonary ventilation to the major pulmonary air volumes and capacities; Explore how commonly-used medical treatments work to alleviate or ameliorate the specific medical problems covered in class and assess lifestyle habits that can prevent medical issues.
