Course Description

Masterpieces of Symphonic Music - 19th Century | Delve into the 19th century nationalistic music style. Topics include stylistic changes of individual composers, identifying musical forms, and determining the historical and social significance of 19th century classical music. Note: Senior Cycle fee class. Students must be 55 years or older by start date in order to enroll in this class.

Learner Outcomes

Identify music forms such as concerto, symphony, tone poem; Compare the relationship of classical music to societal influence and determine the historical and social significance of 19th century classical composers; Recognize the importance of the conductor as the interpreter of the composer's music; Explain the role of the orchestra to the composer and identify nationalist characteristics of composers; Appraise the musical components contained in the great masterpieces;

Online | Music Masterpiece: Romantic Russians | This course explores the development of Russian music from its early lack of a national tradition to its emergence as a distinctive cultural force. Students will study the rise of native composition with Mikhail Glinka, the nationalist movement of the Mighty Fistful, and the blending of folk elements with Romanticism. The course concludes with an examination of major Soviet-era influences and composers, including Shostakovich and emigre figures such as Rachmaninov and Stravinsky. | Note: Attendance in online class sessions Tuesdays from 9:00-11:00 a.m. is mandatory for section 201.
