Course Description

Masterpieces of Symphonic Music - 19th Century | Delve into the 19th century nationalistic music style. Topics include stylistic changes of individual composers, identifying musical forms, and determining the historical and social significance of 19th century classical music. Note: Senior Cycle fee class. Students must be 55 years or older by start date in order to enroll in this class.

Learner Outcomes

Identify music forms such as concerto, symphony, tone poem; Compare the relationship of classical music to societal influence and determine the historical and social significance of 19th century classical composers; Recognize the importance of the conductor as the interpreter of the composer's music; Explain the role of the orchestra to the composer and identify nationalist characteristics of composers; Appraise the musical components contained in the great masterpieces;
