Course Description

Truth and Democracy | Study the significance of a "post-truth" society on a theoretical and practical level. Examine the history and devolution of the concepts of truth, reason and reality, and implications for the future of our democratic society. $33 includes $32 fee.

Learner Outcomes

State the essential rules of thought, reason, argument, and logical discourse; Identify the various definitions of truth in the history of philosophy and political science; Analyze the discursive nature of truth in various forms of rhetoric, from journalism and political speech to the modern media; State the importance of rational discourse tied to the concept of truth for the functioning of a democratic society; Analyze the pros and cons of John Rawls’ concept of a just society.
