Historical Impact of Iconic Fashion Designers | Explore two iconic fashion designers of the 20th century and the historical world events that influenced the lives of Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel and Christian Dior. Examine their intense rivalry. Note: Senior Cycle fee class. Students must be 55 years or older by start date in order to enroll in this class.

Learner Outcomes

Identify three world events in the 19th and 20th centuries that influenced the life of Gabrielle Chanel and Christian Dior and discuss how these events influenced their designs; Compare and contrast three distinctive design elements of Chanel and Dior; Examine Chanel’s iconic mix of blending women’s and men’s wear and Dior’s “New Look” fashion designs from 1919 to 1980; Discuss details of the Chanel-Dior rivalry and the impact both had on changing the way women dressed in the 20th century; Recognize the impact of both Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel’s and Christian Dior’s timeless designs on present day luxury fashion sales.
