Course Description

Woke Up with The Blues | Listen to live and recorded examples of 20th-century Black American folk compositions. Explore biographies, social conflicts between spiritual and blues music, quandaries such as cultural appropriation, and how the music figures in today’s “wokeness.” $33 includes $32 fee.

Learner Outcomes

Describe the origins of the Black American genre of music known as “The Blues”; Distinguish among types of Blues (Delta, Country, Piedmont, Chicago and others); Name at least 5 Blues Greats from the 1920s to the 1940s; List various subject matter [topics] of old blues; Sing along to one call and response song; Describe various musical structures and verse sequences this music form can take; Discuss the question of why Blues continue to enchant and influence our music?; Appraise the original artists (when possible) as well as live recreations of their various compositions.
