Course Description

George Washingtons Mount Vernon Estate | Examine the architecture of Washingtons Mount Vernon and discover the original name of this historic American landmark. Discuss Colonial and Federal construction styles, construction techniques, and extensive history of the main house and outbuildings of the self-contained manor. $116 includes $56 fee. Note: Transportation included. Extensive walking required. Participants must be able to walk and stand for hours without assistance. Wear comfortable walking shoes and dress for the outdoors. Bring a bag lunch or purchase on own.

Learner Outcomes

Explore the architecture of Mt. Vernon which exemplifies Colonial and Federal style construction and describe the site map of a self-contained plantation; List two of the original construction techniques used in the creation of the main house and the outbuildings; Explain the positioning of the main house and outbuildings in relationship to the immediate geography and raw materials produced on the plantation; Articulate the significance of the Colonial Revival Garden and identify the locations of both the upper and southern gardens; Examine the historical significance of the theft attempt and eventual relocation of Washington’s tomb and discuss the reason Washington was not buried at the U.S. Capital.
