Course Description

Examine the materials, styles and shapes of American-made ceramics and glass from 1700 to 1870. View the Winterthur collection which includes stoneware, earthenware, porcelain ceramics and blown, pressed, engraved, three-mold glass. Discuss the historical timeline of these treasures. $131 includes $56 fee. Note: Transportation included. Extensive walking required. Participants must be able to walk and stand for hours without assistance. Wear comfortable walking shoes and dress for the outdoors. Bring a bag lunch or purchase on own.

Learner Outcomes

List two of the contributions made to American decorative arts, glass, and ceramics by Henry Francis DuPont; Describe three types of wares and identify ceramic wares that are handmade, molded, transfer printed, slip decorated, and or glazed found at Winterthur Museum; Name two outcomes of the tax placed on glass in the mid 1700’s and two places the colonies found much of their glassware prior to the American Revolution; Identify and compare the differences between engraved, blown, cut, pressed, three-mold glass; Evaluate ceramic and glass objects, according to their material, construction, style, and decoration for the colonial period, the Federal period, and the Grecian period.
