Course Description

Examine the history of the Mount Cuba Center, its connection to the DuPont family and the conditions of the 1930s. Explore the trial gardens, Round Gardens and the South Lawn. Discover the process that transformed the hundred-acre farm into a horticultural ecosystem. Lecture is followed by a guided tour of Mount Cuba Center and Gardens. $104 includes $49 fee. Note: Transportation included. Extensive walking required. Participants must be able to walk and stand for hours without assistance. Wear comfortable walking shoes and dress for the outdoors. Bring a bag lunch or purchase on own.

Learner Outcomes

Name the founders of the Mt. Cuba center and describe their connection to the DuPont family; Explain the prominence of the Mt. Cuba property after the Wall Street Crash of 1929 and name the landscape designer who planned the gardens; Describe the impact of the Dust Bowl era of the 1930’s on the Delaware region and the significance World War II had on the installation of the South Lawn and Round Gardens at Mt. Cuba; Discuss the ecological, and horticultural value of the trial-garden and name three key native plants grown in the garden that highlight the ecosystem at Mt. Cuba.
