Course Description

Multicultural Law Enforcement | Explore practical and theoretical perspectives of multicultural law enforcement. Address the understanding of culture, race and ethnicity in the law enforcement field as it pertains to multicultural communities. Focus on communities of color - systemic issues of racism, poverty and the lack of economic advancement; immigration and unauthorized migrants in the United States; recruitment and retention of women and people of color; the multifaceted dimensions of diversity and its impact on law enforcement; issues related to multiracial census groups; native American tribal police; information on the mentally and physically challenged; and multicultural issues related to terrorism, homeland security and disaster preparedness.

Examine the challenges in law enforcement, improving communication in multicultural communities, and understanding the dimensions of diversity; Discuss the issues within law enforcement workplace and the changing workforce; Differentiate ways to recruit, retain and promote a diverse workforce; Examine cross-cultural and communication strategies, and understand law enforcement with various demographics and identities; Discuss issues related to terrorism and homeland security, and examine cultural effectiveness in law enforcement.
