Course Description

Stoneleigh: History and Natural Land Garden | Examine the history of the Stoneleigh, Natural Lands, and its connection to the Pennsylvania railroad. Explore the grounds of this biodiversity garden. Discover the sustainable maintenance practices used at Natural Lands and how they can be integrated into day-to-day life at home. Pre-site lecture is followed by a docent tour of the Washington home. $93 includes $51 fee. Note: Transportation included. Extensive walking is required. Participants must be able to walk and stand for hours without assistance. Wear comfortable walking shoes and dress for the outdoors. Bring a bag lunch or purchase on own.

Learner Outcomes

Name the original owners in 1867 of the sixty-five acres that are now Stoneleigh Natural Lands and describe how they became part of Natural Lands; Explain the significance of Edward Smith and the Haas family in the evolution of the Stoneleigh property and name the landscape designer who planned the gardens; Name five species of plants installed at Stoneleigh and examine the planning and strategy behind the biodiversity gardens, which are essential to improving the environment;  Explore the Garden’s maintenance practices and list two sustainable gardening practices used on the Stoneleigh grounds.
