Course Description

American Humor: Mark Twain and Gang | Laugh at and engage with American humor centered on the writings of Mark Twain in conjunction with folktales, tall tales, trickster tales, satirical takes and absurd spins. Entertain humor as a literary art form and subject of philosophy, guided by the incomparable Twain.

Learner Outcomes

Explore why humor is characteristic, indeed necessary, to the human condition; Inquire into the question of whether there is a distinctive form of humor that is American; Consider that laughter makes painful psychological and social situations more bearable, bends social mores, and promotes social justice; Differentiate between comedy and drama in literary forms; Examine the general relation that art bears to life; Laugh at comical situations and expressions and, if possible, to ask why; Explore opportunities to laugh and see the funny side of people or events; Enhance communication skills of listening, thinking, speaking, and writing.
