Course Description

Discover how libraries began and hear stories about people who have spent their lives protecting and collecting books and how they will continue in the digital age. Identify famous bookstores around the world, and explore book festivals, book towns, and even look at novels about books. Note: Senior Cycle fee class. Students must be 55 years or older by start date in order to enroll in this class.

Learner Outcomes

Identify two early libraries around the world and describe how and why specific collections were accumulated; Explore ways a library collection can contribute to the stability of a culture and discuss two methods used by libraries to ensure culture in the Digital Age; Evaluate famous bookstores and list two ways they have adapted to societal and technological shifts; Compare and contrast the traditions of book festivals and book towns with antiquarian bookstores in supporting a reading culture for society; Explore two or more “books about books” and participate in a small group discussion.
