Course Description

Writers on Walking: Exploring Restlessness | Explore the world through writers’ works. National Geographic journalist Paul Salopek chronicles his global Out of Eden Walk; wander with 17th century Japanese bard Matsuo Basho’s prose-poems; and examine passages from classic and contemporary writers on the connections between walking and life.

Learner Outcomes

Examine classic and contemporary writers who have explored the connections between walking and life; Identify relevant works in literature, philosophy, religion, and science; Discuss the concept of human restlessness and the call of the unknown; Examine the individual styles of Salopek, Basho, Dante, Chaucer, Johnson and Boswell, Wordsworth and Coleridge, Thoreau, Solnit, and Bryson; Recognize the act of walking can take many forms: pilgrimage, protest, meditation, and health.
