Course Description

Historic Baltimore Church Architecture 1 |Examine the mid-19th century ecclesiastical architecture in Baltimore by two significant architects. Participate in an evening lecture and daytime tour of Old St. Pauls Church, built in1854, and the National Shrine of St. Alphonus Church, built in 1842. $68 includes $29 fee. Note: Transportation by AACC included. Extensive walking required. Participants must be able to walk and stand for hours without assistance. Bring a bag lunch or purchase on own. Wear comfortable walking shoes and dress for outdoors.

Learner Outcomes

Examine two examples of ecclesiastical architecture in Baltimore from different periods and styles. List the architectural styles popularized by Robert Cary Long, Jr. and Richard Upjohn. Distinguish the characteristics of Gothic Revival, and Romanesque revival styles. Contrast the differences between the structures studied and explain the 14th and 15th century architectural design roots of each building. Discuss and critique the Baltimore architectural sites visited.
