Course Description

Study the history and philosophy of corrections in federal, state and community systems along with probation, parole and other methods of rehabilitating offenders. CEUs issued. $382 includes $10 fee. Note: All sections also offered for credit as CJS-113.

Learner Outcomes

Discuss the philosophical and historical development of the United States Constitution in relationship to penology; describe the evolution of crime and punishment in the United States; d escribe the overall purpose of jails and prisons; identify the leading contributions to prison reform during the 18th century; discuss major social and political eras that influenced prison development; identify key underlying social factors that influenced prison development; evaluate the full concept of punishment; discuss the general parameters of inmates' constitutional and civil rights; describe various inmate populations and the relative accommodations, measures of confinement and treatment; describe the historical and contemporary designs of correctional management and inmate supervision; identify the effects of imprisonment on inmates.
