Course Description

Mechanical Technology Lab | Participate in hands-on lab activities in heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), plumbing systems and forklift operations. CEUs issued. $1,916 includes $806 fee and supplies. Corequisites: Mechanical Technology Lecture (CIT-316) and Heart Saver First Aid CPR AED (NRN-332). Note: Must be 16 or older to enroll. There is an additional cost for Heart Saver First Aid CPR AED (NRN-332), which includes required online coursework and assignments completed through Canvas.

Learner Outcomes

Identify and demonstrate safe use and maintenance of hand and power tools; Interpret construction drawings and written specifications in accordance with construction building codes; Apply construction drawings and written specifications to plan the installation of  plumbing and HVAC units that  will meet client requests and regulations set forth in the local area building code; Employ basic measurement, algebra, and geometry calculations necessary for mechanical trades to estimate, measure, and layout materials in both the classroom and laboratory environment; Apply OSHA safety training to identify and mitigate workplace and laboratory risks with reference to industry regulations, tool use, material handling guidelines, and personal protective equipment. Identify and demonstrate safe operations of a forklift; Identify and demonstrate materials for propress fittings; Demonstrate safe cutting, joining, and installation of ductwork, plastic pipe, copper pipe, steel pipe, and fittings; Demonstrate handling refrigerants safely in compliance with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations and industry standards; Identify and demonstrate threading techniques to create pipe threads; Describe and demonstrate procedures for the use of different pipe materials and their associated fittings and valves for hot-and cold-water distribution; steam and water heating systems; gas and air piping systems; and drain, waste, and vent (DWV) systems.
