Course Description

Travel along with us to study the history and culture of Provence and Southern France. Imagine taking a train ride from Paris to Avignon, visiting the Palace of the Popes and tasting the heralded food of Lyon, the Culinary Capital of the World. Discover the part of the France that nurtured Cezanne, Gaugin and Picasso and see the vistas that inspired them. Discover the lavender fields of Provence and soak in the excitement of Monaco, Cannes and Nice. Note: Senior Cycle fee class. Students must be 55 years or older by start date in order to enroll in this class.

Learner Outcomes

Identify the topography from Paris to Nice, and list three ways that this area culturally and historically connects France; Describe the development of the cuisine, culture and language in the Provence region and how it represents contemporary France; Explore the development of cultural and architectural sites such as the Palace of the Popes; and Medieval castles and name three common architectural characteristics; Examine how the artists Cezanne, Gaugin and Picasso used this area to move from Impressionist art to Modern Art; Summarize how the influence of nearby Italy and Spain created the present-day culture of this area.
